In this stage of the lesson the teacher is warming up the students and gently introducing the teaching point for this lesson; talking about first impressions. The teacher takes this opportunity to assess the skills of the students including use of grammatical structures, pronunciation, fluency and other speaking skills. The teacher is checking the students’ comfort level in using the structures in the lesson to help with decision making in upcoming stages such as which students to call on first and pairings for upcoming activities.
Formal Lesson Introduction
This stage involves getting the students to make a much more focused use of the words and phrases for the lesson. Students are given prompts and sample sentences by the teacher in order to demonstrate structure in a low pressure environment. Asking students to make sentences from a word list, some of them unknown, in front of the class can create anxiety so the teacher is being careful to ease these students into this next stage. Note that the teacher continues to assess the students’ pronunciation, particularly with the word “sensitive” to make decisions about the next lesson stage.
Focused Practice
At this stage the instructor is introducing and practicing advanced native English speaker pronunciation. The students had indicated earlier in the lesson that they had an upcoming speaking test (IELTS) and their need to do well. The teacher has assessed the students’ pronunciation skill throughout the lesson and determined this to be a worthwhile addition to the class. The purpose of this activity, as the teacher mentions, is twofold; to devlop the students speaking and, by extension, their listening skills. These students have demonstrated good pronunciation during the lesson but would benefit from understanding how to improve further. This is a high level activity that these students are capable of handling.
